Ghost in the Puppet and the Machine

The experimental animation starts from Sándor Márai’s text The Ventriloquist, in which lifeless puppets are given souls and try to exist in the human world with this gift. The moving-image work translates this motif into the language of the AI age.

My digital graphics, built from organic elements, come to life through the mediation of the algorithm; artificial intelligence becomes the puppeteer in this creative space. The central question of the experiment, for me, is whether, if the movement of my graphics is now generated by the machine, human and algorithm can intertwine in such a way that a real “spirit” inhabits the resulting work — or whether the boundary between artist and tool becomes blurred, and we should rather ask: who controls whom, who is the puppet and who is the puppeteer?
